is a global manufacturer and marketer of business machines and other office equipment. Fellowes was founded in 1917 by Harry Fellowes when he bought a small box-manufacturing business from an acquaintance, Walter Nickel, who was called up during World War 1.
Harry Fellowes bought the fledgling box business for $50. The company at that time was manufacturing a corrugated filing box designed for bank records. A new amendment to the law regarding implementation of a federal income tax meant that it became vital to retain banking records. It presented a perfect opportunity to a manufacturer of strong, affordable boxes for keeping such records.
Walter Nickel rejoined Harry Fellowes after the war, and they dubbed their box the Liberty Box as a patriotic gesture. It soon became popular with a wide range of businesses. The company flourished and more product lines were introduced over the next 60 years. Complete systems of company records management evolved. This was a prosperous period for Fellowes and Folger Fellowes became President of the company in 1951 whilst Harry's other son, John Fellowes, became Vice President.
Fellowes expanded into new areas such as desk accessories and brought out new product lines including the first personal shredders. Fellowes originated in Chicago, Illinois and now has offices in the United Kingdom (since 1972), and 12 other countries including France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Russia and Spain. Worldwide, Fellowes employs over 1,700 people and Fellowes products are sold in over 100 countries world-wide.
Fellowes recently completed construction of their first manufacturing plant in Dongguan, China. Fellowes shredders are known as the Powershred (registered trade mark) range and go from personal shredders up to the large office sector. Certain larger and higher security models available in the USA are not available in the UK.
Fellowes have machines manufactured in the USA, Europe and Asia. HSM of Germany manufacture the 320 and 420 models for Fellowes.
